Spring Break Vacation Staycation?
Staycation in Hays County: Relax, Explore, and Enjoy Local Fun
We love a staycation. With five kids between us and a love for local, we tend to take small local trips - sometimes just an overnight - to “get away.” Living in Hays County means that San Marcos, Buda, Kyle, Wimberley, Gruene, Lockhart, Driftwood, Dripping Springs, and New Braunfels are just a short drive away - and all of the local shopping, dining, outdoor and water activities, and live music options you could want!
Willing to drive just a bit further? Well, hello Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, and San Antonio! You don’t have to travel far in Central Texas to create a staycation spring break vacation to remember!
Spring Break is right around the corner, and while jet-setting to a far-off destination sounds tempting, there’s something special about embracing a staycation right here in Hays County. Whether you want to unwind, explore the outdoors, or enjoy local eats and entertainment, there’s plenty to do without leaving town. So, if you’re skipping the airport lines and keeping it local this year, here’s how to plan the ultimate Hays County Staycation.
1. Stay Somewhere New (Even If It’s Close to Home!)
A staycation doesn’t mean you have to stay in your own home! Consider booking a cozy Airbnb in Wimberley, a boutique stay at Sage Hill Inn, or a night at a local resort like Kalahari or Sonesta Bee Cave for a change of scenery. A fresh space can help set the vacation mood without going far.
2. Get Outside and Explore
Springtime in Central Texas is perfect for outdoor adventures, and Hays County has no shortage of scenic spots.
Hike and Swim at Jacob’s Well or Blue Hole – The water might still be chilly, but the hiking trails and picnic spots are perfect this time of year.
Kayak the San Marcos River – Rent a kayak or paddleboard and float through one of the most beautiful spring-fed rivers in Texas.
Hike at Purgatory Creek or Dripping Springs Ranch Park – Get in some fresh air, take in the Hill Country views, and enjoy the wildflowers starting to bloom.
Go Fishing or Have a Picnic at Five Mile Dam – A great spot to spend a relaxing afternoon by the water.
3. Treat Yourself to a Local Food Tour
Skip the kitchen and take yourself (or your family) on a self-guided food tour through Hays County.
Breakfast at Summer Moon Coffee or The Root Cellar Café – Start the day with great coffee and a hearty meal.
Lunch at Hays City Store or Ivar’s River Pub – Enjoy classic Texas flavors, burgers, or fresh seafood with a view.
Dinner at Salt Lick BBQ or Trattoria Lisina – Whether you’re craving legendary BBQ or authentic Italian food in a vineyard setting, these are top picks.
Sweet Treats at Rhea’s Ice Cream or Buda’s Sweet Cakes 4 U – Because no staycation is complete without dessert!
4. Plan a Relaxing Spa & Wellness Day
Spring Break is the perfect time to reset and recharge. Treat yourself to a spa day at Mokara Spa in Austin or Face to Face Spa in Kyle, or book a massage, yoga class, or breathwork session for a wellness-focused day.
5. Explore Local Wineries, Breweries & Distilleries
Hays County is home to some amazing Hill Country wineries and breweries that are worth a visit.
Driftwood Estate Winery or Duchman Winery – Sip on local wines with stunning vineyard views.
Middleton Brewing or AquaBrew – Enjoy craft beer and a laid-back atmosphere.

6. Enjoy Live Music & Entertainment
Staycations are all about having fun right where you are. Check out live music at The Railhouse in Kyle, Buck’s Backyard in Buda, or The Marc in San Marcos. If you’re in the mood for a movie night, catch a film at EVO Entertainment or the historic Corral Theatre in Wimberley.
